Choose the Right Export Packaging Format

Four established packing and transport modes cover containerized solid bitumen, large flexible packs, heated tank equipment and large-volume bulk marine supply.

Containerized solid bitumen

New Steel Drums

A widely used export format for solidified bitumen where conventional container handling is preferred and continuous heating is not required during transport.

Unit / Payload
Typical reference: 180 kg net per drum; other sizes may be offered subject to specification.
Loading Capacity
Typical planning range: about 18–20 MT per 20ft FCL; a 110 × 180 kg loading plan equals about 19.8 MT before carrier and road-limit checks.

Large flexible export packs

Jumbo Bags / FIBC

Large flexible packaging reduces the number of handling units and can reduce packaging waste for buyers equipped to lift and process bagged bitumen safely.

Unit / Payload
Common export reference: about 1,000 kg per bag; other capacities require an approved bag design and handling method.
Loading Capacity
Typical reference: 20 × 1,000 kg bags ≈ 20 MT per 20ft FCL, subject to payload and loading restrictions.

Intermodal liquid bitumen

Bitutainer / Heated ISO Tank Container

An insulated tank-container solution for liquid bitumen, suitable for repeat industrial supply where the receiver can safely handle heated discharge.

Unit / Payload
Typical payload range is commonly around 20–25 MT, depending on tank tare, density, route and maximum gross weight.
Loading Capacity
One tank unit per chassis/container position; nominal volume may be around the 20–24 m³ class depending on equipment.

Large-volume marine shipment

Bulk Heated Vessel

Large-volume liquid bitumen can move in specialized heated tankers when loading and discharge terminals have suitable heated storage and pumping infrastructure.

Unit / Payload
Parcel size is vessel- and terminal-specific; bulk movements are generally used for large supply programs rather than single-container quantities.
Loading Capacity
Project-specific charter parcel; industry use commonly starts at large multi-hundred or 1,000+ MT shipment scales.

How to Select a Packaging Method

The best option depends on cargo volume, local unloading capability, heating infrastructure and the buyer’s operating process.

Shipment Scale

Match the packing format to the order volume: containerized lots, repeated tank-container supply or larger bulk programs.

Receiving Infrastructure

Confirm forklifts, cranes, storage tanks, heating systems and safe unloading capability before selecting the format.

Temperature Management

Solid drums and bags normally travel without heat; liquid tank and vessel movements require temperature-control planning.

Route & Legal Limits

Container payload, road gross-weight rules, tank tare, carrier acceptance and terminal restrictions can change the final load plan.
